Gypsy Punk FTW!

Ok taking a break from picking up all the dirty clothes from the floor and cleaning the yellow brown ring stains, and did some digging on one of my new (from a few months ago) favorite bands. They are supremely hard to categorize, but the best I've heard is gypsy punk. The frontman is a Eugene Hutz, and he was a lead actor in the movie Everything is Illuminated and did a most premium job at it! Great movie, rated very highly on my personal list of favorites. I actually saw the movie a couple years ago, and only recently was turned onto the fact (thanks Josh K) that the dude had a band and they were completely amazing. That band is called Gogol Bordello and is quickly becoming a "big deal" and rightfully so. Eugene actually just released a small independant movie with Madonna last month, so for sure he's on the rise. So here's links to a few of my favorite songs, the first taste is free:

Start Wearing Purple - (Coincidentally an unofficial theme-song of the local NFL team)
Wonderlust King

Okay so now that you've been introduced, I'm going to summarize hours over the past months of my searching for GB stuffs.

First off a search of the bittorrent sites I linked in my previous article will score you the GB discography. Newest (and imo best) albums are Gypsy Punks: Underdog World Strike and (the newer) Super Taranta!.

Ok so going deeper into the rabbit hole (if you so choose) is the movie Everything is Illuminated. Watch it, even if you don't like the band. Great movie.

NPR's "All Songs Considered" is a free podcast on iTunes and has a free entire concert taped locally here in DC at the 9:30 club available for download. While you are there browse the other free concerts. Lots of bands, most I didn't recognize (good chance you might) but there is a live set by the Raconteurs there also, which I'm 1/2 through listening to.

Okay at this point it goes fanboy crazy so it gets a little more "fringe" shall we say:

Available for free download from the venerable archive.org website is a live set from the 2008 Bonaroo music festival called the Superjam. Archive.org has other Superjam sets from previous years (but not the regular band sets) if you feel like searching through the site. So back to my point. The 2008 Bonaroo superjam was a tribute set to the artist Tom Waits (about whom I'll immediately say I know nothing about, but apparently wrote a lot of songs that didn't really get radio play, but other people did covers of and made big). The artists performing in the jam are Eugene Hutz, Les Claypool (from Primus, the dude is the shit if you didn't know), and a few songs with Kirk Hammet from Metallica. I just discovered it a half hour ago and haven't listened to it yet, but it can't be bad right?

Okay, so an earlier movie by Eugene was called The Pied Piper of Hutzovina, and I just discovered it and its downloading via bittorrent as I type. I'll report back when able, but I gotta busy week coming up so if you get ballsy and watch it first let me know.

Okay I thought I had more but I can only think of one more, and this is more for my local peeps all up in the 410/443 and that is I just moments ago while typing this out discovered that Gogol Bordello is preforming NEW YEARS FUCKING EVE 2 hours down the road in Philly, which is exactly where,... like 4 or 5 updates down I said.... the Mummers are. On the night before the one day a year they march (weather permitting I must remind myself). If that isn't a damn sign that I have to do this, then I don't know what is. Anyone else here game to join me? I'll be flying solo if not, but that don't bother me at all cause its gonna rock regardless.

Ok well that's it,.. peace

I really wish I could join you on that trip but I can't....

Ugh.

You should check out a movie called Wristcutters: A Love Story for some good usage of Gogol Bordello's music and even a character somewhat based on Eugene.
