RIP this blog
Most of my updates these days are on my twitter account. So much easier. Maybe someday I'll have more interest in this blog.

Don't buy Seagate
So back some months ago, I put together a RAID-5 array with 4 Seagate Baracuda 1TB drives. Ever since I built it, its acted a little funny on the boot up. It would hang on the detecting drives section, and then after about 10 seconds, I'd hear a "thunk" from a drive and it would continue booting up after that. And it wouldn't act up in any other way than that. Except sometimes it would hang forever on the detecting drive portion and I would never hear the sound. Well now it makes the Thunk sound a minute or two after windows loads and then my RAID controller goes nuts and says a drive failed. And let me tell you how fun it was when the RAID alarm went off at 5am this morning. Sounds like a loud digital alarm clock.
Called Seagate and its going back under warranty. But if I hadn't had it in an array and was just using it as a regular drive, like a normal person.... I'd be sweating against the clock trying to recover what I could from it, if I could get anything. I had bought this drive last fall. Its not old. Also Seagate has a huge problem with the firmware on these drives. They just aren't making good drives right now, and I thought I would warn anyone poor soul that reads this blog with that nugget of information.

If you are in the market for a new monitor
This is the one I use and I wouldn't hesitate to say its the best monitor I ever owned. And its onsale right now at newegg.com!
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductReview.aspx?Item=N82E16824254026
If I didn't have to save money up for some car work, I'd be buying one to replace my TV. Granted it is NOT a tv, it doesn't have a tuner. Also it has some limitations on the inputs if you are wanting to send it component and other stuff. But as a monitor, its hands down rockin.
One caveat. I bought mind at Best Buy when they still carried them, so if it had dead pixels (it didn't which is awesome) I could have taken it back. I'm unclear on newegg's dead pixel policy (I read it once, and forgot it), but that's the only thing I can't vouch for. The product though is amazing.

Also if you were to get one, these are the settings I found in a forum post. They are the ones I use, and I once I made these adjustments it made the monitor look so much better.

I bought this monitor for photo editing and have been pretty happy so far. It has the typical TN issues, but I'm willing to let them slide because of the value for such a large display. I calibrated my LCD using an Eye-One colorimeter to a whitepoint of 6500K with a gamma of 2.2. It really helped the image. Here are my calibrated settings if you're curious. I'm not sure if they will translate to other monitors as there may be other factors at play.
HF289H settings:
Brightness - 58
Contrast - 75
X-contrast - off
Color settings (set to user):
R 67

Also my ftp site is coming back to life slowly but at the moment I'm going to cycle different collections through it. Now Playing: My documentaries collection. 131 GB of PBS, Nat Geo, Hist Channel, BBC, you name it. Also a few other misc things on there still left over from various requests. Freddi Fish should be working now (I think it wasn't) so if you have any youngins it's Tyler (my 5 yo nephew) approved and he kept asking for more of them, so its the whole 5 game collection. Unless it was Josh that liked the games, can't remember feel free to correct me sis. You can leave comments using your gmail login by-the-by, so you don't have to make a new account.
Anyways the link for the ftp is:
ftp://buddy:letmein@98.233.143.70
You can paste that link into firefox and download away. Internet Explorer has problems with it. I posted a workaround a few months ago, but I don't remember what it was so if you have to use IE, then go back a few pages.
Otherwise I'm feeling better from my cold I had over the weekend. Throat is all nasty and sore still, but head is better. Really busy at work lately, upgrading our internet connection to two T3s and new firewalls so been burning a lot of brain cells trying to get the best setup. I had a huge load taken off my mind yesterday when I found out I don't owe the IRS 2700$. Nothing else new, I hope everyone out there is doing well.

Getting Sick :(
Started yesterday evening with a scratchy throat. Took a pre-emptive NyQuil gelcap last night, and I slept okay, but its building up steam and already I have a headache and can feel it getting worse. I'm out of sick days since I just used all my time off for my trip to STL, so TGIF so I can use my weekend to recouperate.
Otherwise its same 'ol same 'ol. Watched a pretty good movie last night called Pornstar, its basically a biopic about the life of Ron Jeremy. Interviews with his family, a day in the life of, interviews with co-starts, etc. IMPRESSIVE,... and I'm talking about the film. Dude's really just a regular joe. At the end I actually started to feel bad for the guy. He would really like to be a regular actor and has the stigma of being only a body part.
